Question: How should I, as an Adapted Physical Education Teacher, present my concern that elementary school classroom teachers are not providing the state - required minutes of physical education for their classes and/or are not providing a skill development program (standard based). This affects my ability to help students with disabilities continue to develop their motor skills and social skills in an organized way in a mainstream class if it's only an expanded recess.

Dear No PE,

It is always appropriate to approach any principal at any school to let them know that you are concerned about the lack of physical education opportunity at their school. That you feel that students at your school should be able to access the playground in a more constructive way. Perhaps you could volunteer to present a staff development to any or all of your schools on setting up a physical education program. You could present to them activities that teachers can work on with their classes in relationship to the standards, what types of games can be played on the playground, and introduce to them to a psychomotor program that they can get the whole school involved in as part of their PE time. Remember, you can show them how to set one up but the school needs to take ownership of it. As Adapted Physial Education Teachers, we are the physical education experts in this field and any consultation or advice that we lend to a school should be very much appreciated.
